Growing up with music ‒ childhood and youth

It happened on planet Earth in 1950, somewhere around 45°N, 16°E, that is to say – in Zagreb. The position of the stars on that day indicates – in the sign of Aquarius.

“One youth, one world of hope…”

A child of exceptional musical talent, at the age of 10 she became a member of the Croatian Radiotelevision (HRT) Choir. Singing a serious musical repertoire, from old sacred songs, through classical and modern avant-garde, all the way to ethno-traditional music, she received her first and later much richer musical education.

In 1962, their choir, under the direction of maestro Dinko Fio, won the GRAND PRIX award, in a competition in France, for the best children’s choir in the world. Although raised on Monteverdi, Bach, Beethoven and Britten, she quickly showed an interest in rock music and in 1967 she became the lead singer of the popular rock group O’Hara, and later the group Zlatni akordi.  In only her first appearance she caused a real sensation with the public: in her singing she refined all that was best from the most diverse musical genres. At her first festival performance, at the biggest contemporary pop music festival in Opatija, she announced the arrival of an exceptional singing personality on the then Yugoslav music scene.

Not only with her mesmerising voice (which ranges from contralto to soprano) and original interpretations but equally so with her unique and intriguing appearance, Josipa Lisac quickly became a recognised rock star. Developing and persistently going against all conventional norms, she developed her unique style of musical expression. She chose a considerably harder, but all the more radical and worthwhile career path.
